US Open Playoff Format: A New Era

Subtle yet impactful: US Open playoff format to change for the first time since 2018

What is the US Open playoff format?

The US Open is the only major tournament that uses a two-hole aggregate format for its playoff. This means that the two players or teams with the lowest scores after 72 holes play an additional two holes, with the aggregate score from those two holes determining the winner.

The two-hole aggregate format was introduced in 2018, and it is the first time that the US Open playoff format has been changed since 2008. Prior to 2008, the playoff was played over 18 holes.

The change to a two-hole aggregate format was made in an effort to shorten the playoff and make it more exciting for fans.

If there is a playoff at the 2023 US Open, it will be the first since the two-hole aggregate format was introduced.
