Cicada Invasion

Billions of Cicadas to Surface in Rare Double-Brood Emergence

Trillions Expected to Emerge in Multiple States

Prepare for the Unusual Phenomenon in Spring 2024

This spring, nature enthusiasts and residents alike will witness an extraordinary event as trillions of cicadas prepare to emerge from the ground in several states. This rare double-brood emergence, where two separate groups of cicadas will appear during the same season, is expected to occur in the coming weeks.

One group, known as Brood XIX, consists of 13-year cicadas and will emerge in Georgia and the southeastern United States. The second group, Brood XXXIV, are 17-year cicadas and will surface in Indiana, Kentucky, and surrounding areas.

While the full-scale emergence is not yet underway, experts advise preparing for the cicada season. These insects can produce a distinctive buzzing sound, and their large numbers may cause inconvenience, especially in urban areas.

Cicadas are not considered harmful to humans or pets, but they can be a nuisance to some. They feed on plant sap and do not bite or sting. However, their loud buzzing, which can reach up to 100 decibels, may be disruptive.

This rare double-brood emergence is a testament to the resilience and interconnectedness of the natural world. It is a reminder that even in the midst of our busy lives, we can take a moment to appreciate the wonders that surround us.
